
Today fasting is all the rage and many studies are being conducted to explore why fasting is so beneficial for us. Every year more people use fasting as a way to overcome chronic pain and disease and regain health.
But what happens to us when we fast?
Fasting reduces our blood sugar levels within 12-16 hours. How exactly this shows up in each person does depend on their particular micro-biome. The wide diversity of our ‘bio-individuality’ can account for the differences between people, so your experience is unique!
Once blood sugars levels are decreased we start to burn fat and produce ketone. Also we start to release GABA neurotransmitters that support a relaxation, calming our mind and body, reducing and eliminating our sense of hunger. This follows the release of ketons.
At this time inflammation is also reduced and growth hormones increase – all good news for our bodies renewal.

A longer fast of around 48 hours deepens the repairs and maintenance and also starts to help us get over some of our addictions. By abstaining from eating food, smoking etc our dopamine receptors are ‘reset’. We still need to process the psychological reasons we tend towards addiction, however, the fast will reduce our physical dependence by resetting its dopamine receptors.
