In the weeks before the retreat you may focus on moving your bowels and reducing acidity and caffeine.
MOVING BOWELS: WATER & FIBER
- Water: Up your water and drink 2 litres of water every day.
- Fibre: Up fresh fruit & vegetables in your diet. Try adding 1 tsp psyllium husk to a small glass of water or juice daily. Stir, drink & follow with 1-2 full glasses of water.
- For constipation, you may also wish to try:
- Soaking prunes (prunes and prune soak water).
- Chia seeds (in water)
- Linseeds (in water)
- Slippery Elm (in water).
REDUCING ACIDITY IN DIET
The week or two before the retreat good to eat fresh, organic, non-fried & lighter Foods.
- Cut down on tea and coffee – replace with green tea (still caffeinated), herbals (nettle, fennel, dandelion can help) and ORGANIC decaf/Barley Cup/Yannoh.
- Dump sugar and foods that contain sugar – try xylitol, honey, maple syrup and stevia.
- Enjoy Fresh vegetables lightly steamed or baked vegetables and soups.
- UP raw vegetables and fruit as snacks, juices and smoothies. If your digestion is weak (bloating) blend as smoothies and you may need digestive enzymes.
- Keep Drinking water – aim at 2 liters a day. My trick is having a 1.5-liter jug and a glass on my desk. Carry a bottle, leave a pint glass of water with a squeeze of lemon on your bedside – drink first thing in am.
- Use unrefined natural sea salts (Celtic sea salt, Himalayan salt, le’himal salt, and in seaweed, beets, carrots, celery, spinach) for digestion, movement and reducing water retention. 1.5 tsp p.day is a general recommendation for electrolyte balance.
- Try wholegrain cereals fish or tofu instead of meat – this will lighten the acidity burden.
